In class we experimented with different types of light to use with photography. We did three different types of lighting in this project: natural lighting, rembrandt lighting, and light painting.
Rembrandt Lighting
Rembrandt lighting is used to make a dramatic effect with your subjects. You put a person in front of a black or white backdrop, put a key light source 45 degrees (between the camera and the backdrop), above the subject. A successful Rembrandt photo creates a triangle underneath their eye.
Natural Lighting
Natural Lighting is very easy, you use a window to light your subject instead of an alternate light source. You can use a reflector to bounce the light back at the subjects face.
Light Painting
Light painting is really interesting, because it's a lot like actual painting. To do this, you go into a dark room, have a camera on a tripod, with a couple of flash lights or Christmas lights. You have to set the camera to have a long shutter speed and focus on the person with the light before you turn off the light. Then you hit the shutter speed and move the lights to make cool patterns and drawings.
